The Huruma Project: Tanzania

With their property lease running out, the Huruma Orphanage was facing eviction which could have resulted in the orphans living there becoming homeless with nowhere to go. To prevent this from happening, together with the Woodford Catholic Parish, we raised sufficient funds to purchase the land and buildings for the Orphanage and in doing so have secured the charity's future for generations to come.

Our plans to support the orphanage

About the Huruma Project

After making a donation to purchase essential land for the Huruma Orphanage, Capital International Group is now sending a team of 12 volunteers to the town of Arusha, Tanzania, to refurbish some of the orphanage’s buildings and work with the children. The Huruma Orphanage was set up in 2012 and looks after children between the ages of 4 and 17. Most have been orphaned following the death of one or both parents, often as a result of aids or other life-threatening illness. The orphanage takes in these children and provides basic education, vocational training and a safe place to live. They also help the children to integrate back into society and to find work when they are old enough to do so.
With the aim of sustaining the work of the orphanage, together with the charity’s Trustees, Capital International Group has purchased a piece of land which adjoins the orphanage buildings. The team of volunteers travelling to Tanzania are now on a fundraising mission aiming to raise £25,000 to finance the refurbishment of the existing buildings and develop a small holding on the adjacent land. This work will secure the future for the orphanage and will help it to become self-sufficient in future. It will also enable the Trustees to teach the orphans valuable agricultural and animal husbandry skills, which in turn will help the orphans find work and become self-sufficient.
