The A-Z of Offshore Investing

What to expect from the event?

Please join the Capital International Group for a collaborative event hosted by market leading offshore service providers, who will be presenting on the various and consecutive stages of offshore investing from a South African market perspective.

Our industry experts will offer an overview and insight into their relevant area of expertise, including FX, Tax and Investment Vehicles, to provide members of the audience with the tools on how best to offer unique investment solutions to their clients.

David Noon, Capital International's Commercial Director (SA), will be hosting the event and there will be an opportunity to network with members of the audience from the finance sector.

The event will be taking place in three locations:

Session 1 (Cape Town and Johannesburg):
Transferring Funds Offshore and an Update on the Rand
Tim Powell, Director Sable International Forex
Tim will present information on the exchange control allowances and some technical changes to exchange control in the past 2 years particularly relevant to South Africans leaving the country including implications of financial emigration out and tax emigration in, as well as topics like pension and annuity income, trust distributions and inheritance transfers. He will also touch on the prospects for the Rand this year.
Session 1 (Durban):
Offshore Investing and Foreign Exchange: The Process Involved When Externalising Funds
Jenna Grieve, Merchant West Incompass
Jenna will present Information on the exchange control allowances, SARS Tax clearance certificates and the benefits of using a forex intermediary.
Session 2:
Budget 2023 - What Can We expect?
Graeme Saggers - Tax Director, Nolands
Graeme will present an analysis of the current state of the SARS and review how revenue collections have performed against previous forecasts. He will also be discussing his forecasts on the upcoming Budget speech and proposed tax amendments during the year ahead & the potential impact that these amendments will have when externalising your wealth.
Session 3:
One Platform = Unlimited Opportunities
Ashely Behrmann, Business Development Manager Capital International Group
Ashley will present an overview of the capabilities/possibilities available when using an open-architecture & globally relevant investment platform.
Session 4:
The Protection, Preservation and Succession of Internationalised Assets
Rex Cowley Director, Overseas Trust and Pension
Rex will be discussing various options of how wealth can be held to preserve, protected and untimely passed on once the funds have been internationalised.
Session 5:
Investing Offshore for 2023 and Beyond
Iva Madjarova, Head of Investment Consulting Sygnia Limited
Iva will share her insight into the global economic outlook and share investment themes that your portfolio should have exposure to. She will also provide an overview of the Sygnia foreign currency funds.

Tim Powell

Director, Sable International Forex

Tim has spent most of his 30 year working career in financial services in both South Africa and the UK and for the past 13 years has been involved in forex intermediary services specializing in foreign exchange and exchange control matters for both private clients and companies as well as financial emigration and more recently tax emigration for private clients leaving South Africa

Jenna Dickens

Forex Consultant, Merchant West Incompass

Jenna works for Merchant West Incompass, which was founded in 2003 and focuses on the international flow of money, and the unique issues this brings. Incompass offers the reassurance of being ISO 9001 and 27001 certified and is dedicated to offering both imaginative and far-reaching money exchange services. Jenna has worked in the South African forex market for 9 years specializing in the financial services market and branching into the Corporate forex space.

Graeme Saggers

Tax Director, Nolands

Graeme is Chartered Accountant and Chartered Tax Advisor with over 15 years experience. He holds a master degree in commerce specializing in tax from UCT which was awarded with distinction. As the Head of Tax at Nolands - he has overarching responsibility to educate colleagues and consult to Nolands clients on all relevant tax issues. He has presented and published research on various tax topics both locally and internationally and maintains a keen academic interest as an external examiner and lecturer at the University of Cape Town and University of KZN.

Ashley Behrmann

Business Development Manager

With over 12 years of industry experience, Ashley has a diverse background in advisory, investment management, and business development, and is driven to help clients achieve their goals. Throughout his career, he has assisted advisors in providing bespoke solutions to meet the needs of their clients and has a long track record of success in this area. Ashley joined the Capital International Group in 2022, is based in Johannesburg, and is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with clients and partners, as well as identifying new growth and development opportunities.

Rex Cowley

Director, Overseas Trust and Pension

Rex Cowley is a Director and Co-founder of the specialist personal and employee benefits provider Overseas Trust & Pension. He has over 30 years of experience in global financial services and is recognised for his pioneering work in the international pensions sector. He is a published author on this sector and has chaired master classes and delivered keynote addresses at retirement forums in cities including London, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore and Cape Town. Rex has worked or consulted for firms including JP Morgan, Royal Bank of Canada, Fleming, Close Brothers, Prudential and Old Mutual and has consulted on the development of pension legislation in territories including the Cayman Islands, Gibraltar, Jersey and Guernsey.

Iva Madjarova

Head of Investment Consulting, Sygnia Limited

Iva has spent the majority of her career consulting to some of the largest pension funds in the country. For the first 10 years of her career, she worked at Alexander Forbes Financial Services, spending two years in the investment team focussed on portfolio construction of their global solutions. She subsequently worked at Investec, focussing on bespoke investment solutions for small- and medium-sized retirement funds, and then at NMG Benefits, where she led their key account management program across the business. Iva joined Sygnia in January 2020 to provide advisory services to some of our larger clients and to focus on the development of the Sygnia Itrix business.
